As well as the digipak, I am going to create an advertisement for the digipak as part of the production package. In order to create a successful product that will attract audiences and potentially sell the album I am going to carry out some more research on existing advertisements that will give me inspiration for my own product but also give me an understanding of which features are required to make a successful magazine advertisement.
James Morrison - Songs For You, Truths For Me - Album advertisement
The songs for you truths for me promotional album poster takes aspects of the digipak and applied them to the poster to create a house style that audiences will recognise whilst also linking all of the products together. Unlike the digipak, the poster has used a consistent colour scheme that has been derived from the advertisement background. For example the colour of the lettering has been taken from the brown on James Morrison's jacket and the black cracks in the pavement. The use of a consistent colour scheme makes the poster look very professional and aesthetically pleasing. Like the digipak, the promotional poster continues the logo for the artist and the album through to the advertisement which not only allows audiences to recognise the products but also to create a theme/house style throughout all of his media products. Although the text content is generally quite minimal and is restricted to only one corner of the advertisement. The information presented includes the artist name, the album name, the release date of the album and the name of a track that is included. At the bottom of the advertisement, the text reads 'Includes the single "you make it real"' by presenting a well known track, audiences will be encouraged to buy the album which therefore fulfills the advertisements preliminary aim to present the album to audiences and persuade them to buy the CD. Th only other text on the poster is below the image which provides information of how to find out more about the artist by leaving links to his website and his myspace page. The use of very little text will appeal to the target audience of 16+ people interested in acoustic music, especially females because they will want to just scan the advert and take the important information such as the album release date. The use of an image of the artist who is a white British male will particularly attract women however it may have the opposite effect with men and discourage them from buying the CD. Whereas if the poster was just of the CD or an artistic shot that didn't include the artist they may be slightly more encouraged to purchase the album.
Similarly to the James Morrison digipak and promotional poster, the Newton Faulkner advertisement has taken images from the digipak and used them in the poster in order to create a house style and link the two media products together. Similarly, the use of colours and fonts in the two media products are the same and therefore link the two products further. With the Newton Faulkner album, the font is quite distinctive and therefore will become unique to the media products, giving audiences something to recognise when seeing the products. conventionally, the promotional poster doesn't feature much text, this is because when the audience is flicking through a magazine, they will only glance at the advertisement and need to be able to retain the information quickly. In order to achieve this effect, the text on the poster is large and stands out on the poster background and is kept to a minimum. The text includes the name of the artist and the name of the album in the unique font style, it also includes the words 'The New Album' and 'Includes the single If This Is It' and a release date. By presenting a well known song on the poster 'If This Is It' audiences are then encouraged to buy the album because it features a popular track which they will most likely of heard previous to seeing the poster. The two lines 'The New Album' and the release date '28.09.09' are considerably larger than the other text on the poster. By having the most important lines in a larger font, the audiences attention is automatically drawn to them and are them provided with the necessary information in order to purchase the album, therefore fulfilling the posters preliminary aim to promote the album. Unlike the James Morrison poster, the main image on the poster is a computer generated image rather than a photograph, although this could be a bad thing because it doesn't allow the audience to see who's album is it, it could also be a good thing because it therefore appeals to a larger audience and therefore doesn't exclude any social groups and discourage anyone from purchasing the album. The use of a consistent yet minimal colour scheme is particularly effective because it looks professional and ensures the audience are not drawn away from the advertisement because there is too much going on etc, whilst also allowing all text to stand out on each other and therefore make for easy reading.
The Wombats - Tokyo (Vampire and Wolves) - Album Advertisement

The Wombats promotional poster also uses a number of conventional features that make it look professional as well as creating a continuous house style throughout. For example, the use of the multicoloured wolf image is continued from the front of the digipak through to the album advertisement. Similarly, the use of the fonts and the use of the logo are the continued throughout the media products, creating a house style and a link between all of the products. Although The Wombats advertisement poster continues the same wolf image, they also include three different variations of the different album covers, by including the different album images it provides audiences with something to recognise when looking for the album amongst others in shop etc which makes it easier and quicker to locate the album. The Wombats album features a number of conventional features throughout the poster, for example the use of a consistent font and the inclusion of certain pieces of information such as the artist name, the album name and release date of the album. Extra information on the bottom of the poster includes website links and blog sites to locate extra information about the band, upcoming events and other. Conventionally, each of the different pieces of information are featured in a different sized font depending on their importance or the order they want the audience to see the information. For example, the release date and the name of the album are featured below the band logo in a larger font than everything else. The line 'New Single Out Monday' is one of the most important pieces of information for the audience and therefore is larger than the rest of the text on the poster, meaning the audiences attention is automatically drawn to it when flicking through a magazine. Although The Wombats poster introduces quite a large amount of colours with the wolf image, the rest of the posters colour scheme is kept minimal with a white background and black text. The use of a plain colour scheme makes the text really easy for the audience to read whilst also ensuring the text stands out. The Wombats album advertisement is similar to the Newton Faulkner album promo poster with the use of its images, both posters haven't used a photograph of the artist and is just a computer generated image. By using computer graphics instead of a photograph, the image appeals to a really large target audience and therefore doesn't exclude any social groups and discourage anyone from purchasing the advertised product.
Gwen Stafani - Love. Angel. Music. Baby - Album Advertisement
The Gwen Stefani album advertisement poster is generally quite a busy and therefore eyecatching design, however the amount of bright colours and large content could potentially discourage audiences from reading the poster and therefore does not fulfil it's priliminary aim to encourage audiences to purchase the album. Although the poster could potentially discourage the audiences, the use of conventional features throughout makes it look professional and aesthetically pleasing. The first and most obvious conventional feautre adapted but the poster is the use of a consistent colour scheme throughout, the poster features a gold coloured text which has been taken from the main image. The second conventional feature used by the poster is the inclusion of various text such as the release date of the album, the album name and a number of links for blog pages, websites and event details. The poster also states some of the albums most popular songs by writing 'Including What You Waiting For and Rich Girl' in order to attract audiences attention and encourage them to purchase the album by presenting them with songs they will probably of heard. Typically, the information is displayed in a number of different fonts down the page in order ot importance, with the artist name and album name the biggest followed by the release date of the album. By having these particular pieces of information in a larger font, the audience's attention is automatically drawn to the text and are provided with the information of when they can purchase the product. Unlike some of the other album advertisements, the Gwen Stefani promo poster features a photograph of the female artist, by featuring this image, by including this photograph they are targetting a specific target audience and therefore could exclude some social groups. For example with the photograph being quite a sensual image of a female artist, some women may feel intimidated and will therefore be discouraged from looking at the poster and finding out when the album is available. Similarly to The Wombats album advertisement, the Gwen Stefani poster also includes a picture of the digipak. Again, this allows the audience to see the product and therefore recognise it when they go to purchase it either online, in a shop or other.
Hayley Westenra - Winter Magic - Album advertisement
The Hayley Westenra album advertisement takes a different approach than all of the other promotional posters. Although a number of the features included are generally quite conventionally, they are each displayed in an unconventional manor making the poster look unique yet professional and aesthetically pleasing. At the top of the poster, the name of the album and athe artist are presented in a large and easy to read font making it clear for audiences to see and read when flicking through a magazine. Although the fonts easy quite plain and could be considered boring, their colours have been adapted from the main image of the poster. (The pink font on 'Winter Magic' taken from her pink coat and the grey font on Hayley Westenra from her). By coordinating the colours of the font with the colours of the image the poster looks more professional and aesthetically pleasing. The poster is also quite conventional because it includes a lot of the same text as the other posters such as four different well known songs that it feautures stating 'Winter Magic combines some of the best loved and most familiar seasonal carols such as "Silent Night" and "Coventry Carol" with popular tunes "Little Drummer Boy" and 'Sleigh Ride"', by including highlighting these specific tracks, audiences will hopefully recognise them and feel encouraged to purchase the album. However, unlike a number of the advertisements, the Winter Magic poster presents the text in quite an unconventional way typically the text is displayed in a large, easy to read font but with the Hayley Westenra album advertisement, the text is quite small and is therefore quite hard to read and would definitely not be easily read quickly by audiences flicking through magazines. Although the 'popular tracks' are in a bolder font they are still too small to quickly read and grab the audiences attention. Similarly, the poster also doesn't display a release date which could also be misleading with audiences not being able to understand when the album is available. The poster also includes a photograph of the artist but in a slightly different format to other posters. Typically, the image of the artist is displayed in the centre of the poster and is usually a posed, sensual or thoughtful looking photograph... The Winter Magic album advertisement features a photogrpah of the artist on the front of her album, this not onlu gives people someone to recognise and tehrefore draw their attention to, but it also provides the audience with an image of what the album will look like allowing them to see what it will look like and make it easy for them to look for if they want to purchase it. Although the photograph is unique and creative, by presenting a photograph rather than a computer generated image, the representations of the photograph (a white, british female) could exclude certain social groups and discourage them from purchasing the product.
Summary/Conventions:
- Advertisement posters usually feature similar information; name of the artist, name of the album, some of the most popular tracks, a release date and a website link
- Information displayed is usually presented in different sizes depending on their importance or the order the creater wants the audience to read them
- Promotional posters usually feature either a photograph of the artist or a computer generated image (usually from the digipak cover)
- There are always links from the poster to the digipak, with the use of fonts, colours, images or logos.
- Posters sometimes include an image of digipak
